4 Ways Augmented Reality Could Change Corporate Training Forever

Pro-Visual Publishing understands the importance of Workplace Health and Safety, which is why we are committed to providing resources that assist with addressing legislative responsibilities, and help ensure greater health and safety outcomes for businesses and employees.

Workplace Health and Safety training is a key component in keeping workers safe, which is a core focus of our Interactive Guides. Whether training employees in groups, or when employees use the guides as a reference, Augmented Reality (AR) creates active involvement in health and safety practices for all staff. As well as increasing employee engagement, AR capable guides allow businesses to access a window to more industry-specific resources.

By 2020, 25% of the American workforce will be over the age of 55 and approaching retirement, a phenomenon becoming known as the Silver Tsunami. While this could create a shortage of skilled workers in a number of fields including electric utilities, telecommunications, and manufacturing, augmented reality (AR) is poised not only to address issues faced by our aging workforce, but to fundamentality increase productivity by changing how all employees are trained in the future.

NSW Government calls for the introduction of national quad bike safety system

Quad bikes are a major cause of death and serious injury in rural workplaces, which makes quad safety a key focus on many of our interactive agriculture guides. 115 people have lost their lives on quad bikes in Australia since 2011, and almost two-thirds of those have occurred on farms, according to Safe Work Australia. It’s an issue that evidently needs to be worked on, and more education is necessary to keep our farmers safe.

Recently, Safety Culture reported on the NSW Government’s call to introduce a national five-star safety rating system for quad bikes to reduce farm deaths and injuries.

“After meeting with Senator Michaela Cash last month, we believe a rating system is the next big step to reducing deaths and injuries from quad bike incidents,” said Mr. Kean.

“We want to work with manufacturers and farmers to develop a scheme, which would give buyers the information they need, at a glance, to make the safest possible choice. This is about putting consumer first and doing what we can to keep farmers safe at work.”

Apple unveils raft of product upgrades including smart speaker and augmented reality in iPhones

It’s no secret that augmented reality has endless possibilities. And now, Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of software engineering, says augmented reality is coming to the latest iPhone.

“Mr Federighi announced there would be new development tools for app developers called AR Kit to easily add AR images into the next generation of apps. In a demo, he pointed an iPhone at the empty table and then added a coffee cup and a lamp, with the shadow of the lamp changing as the AR cup is moved around the space. For consumers, this means there will be a lot more apps like Pokemon Go coming to the App Store. Apple has been working with some companies in trialling the technology, including Ikea which lets you add AR furniture into your house, and Federighi demonstrated an AR Lego app which lets you build and pull apart Lego models in AR. In another demonstration of an app called Wingnut AR, a whole movie-like invasion scene played out in augmented reality on an empty table. The difference between this level of AR and Pokemon Go is like the difference between a stick figure drawing and a Picasso.”

Augmented Reality: Marketing’s Trillion-Dollar Opportunity

Pro-Visual Publishing began incorporating Augmented Reality into our health, safety and wellbeing guides in 2015. Our aim was to provide each industry we supply to with interactive resources to increase engagement with health and safety, and to provide further information on our sponsors quality products and services.

Now 2017, the possibilities of AR just keep growing, as technologies improve and more brands incorporate AR into their marketing strategies.

Jay Samit, independent vice chairman for the Digital Reality Practice at Deloitte Digital, recently wrote an article highlighting AR’s influence on the digital arena
:

“As traditional revenues from television advertising are beginning to erode, a new trillion-dollar industry is emerging that mandates brands be omnipresent. Within this decade, augmented reality is going to change the way the always-connected consumer works, shops and plays. Once contextual marketing seamlessly transitions to commerce, it will be trusted brands—and the savvy marketers who manage them—that help consumers augment their world with tailored experiences to enhance their daily lives.”

Your Reading Experience is About to Change

Augmented Reality is brilliant at creating an engaging, immersive experience for users. And now, a children’s author is using this groundbreaking technology to bring reading to life, by transporting readers straight into the world of his books.

“The new novel by Russell, ‘The Dragon Defenders” has five pieces of AR to find throughout it. The series’ website says that using the AR feature:

‘You can meet the evil Pitbull, find out how his men reached the island and what they are there to do, and see the Mother’s Knee Hill come to life!

There are certain pages in the book that are marked with ‘augmented reality spots’. Once the phone hovers over the page, 3D images begin to appear including 3D maps, dragons flying about the room, and even the main characters trotting along on their adventure.”

Interactive technology transforms toolbox safety meetings

The way we engage with the world has evolved significantly as a result of developments in technology. The way we communicate and absorb information has changed. No longer static, this information is now interactive, and it’s called Augmented Reality (AR). Using a smartphone or tablet with an AR-capable application, anyone can hover over traditional print media and watch it come to life. But what does this have to do with safety?

Thirty-five construction site workers are severely injured each day and over a quarter of onsite fatalities are caused by falls from heights. These hard-hitting facts come from a recent report published by Safe Work Australia, emphasising the importance of understanding safe work practices in the building and construction industry. Because construction sites present such a huge number of risks, it’s so important for construction workers to understand the risks they face on site.

This is where AR fits in. Pro-Visual Publishing is one of a number of companies using interactive technology to enhance safety information by developing new resources to help workers stay safe on the job. Our Pro-Vis AR app enables our construction site safety information resource guides to act as a kind of portal, leading users to further information and allowing them to access hidden content.

Three areas that contribute to a large proportion of industry fatalities include fire hazards, falling objects and scaffolding safety. It’s these three areas that are the focus of our state-specific construction site safety guides. Toolbox meetings will take on a whole new level of engagement with news reel videos, training and induction resources, links to additional information and general safety awareness.

But of all the extra content, the most effective aspect of the safety guide is the animated experience, each demonstrating in striking detail the three common causes of fatality on construction sites and how they often occur. Visual and aural experiences allow viewers to engage with content for longer. For construction workers this could mean the difference between life and death. Construction workers will be able to deepen their understanding of potential hazards and prevent risking the safety of themselves and their mates while on site.
Pro-Visual Publishing’s NSW Construction Site Safety Guide is the first of its kind to be released in 2015, with the QLD, WA and VIC editions to follow. The construction site safety guides are vital resources to ensure construction workers return home exactly the way they came to work.

To request a free copy, visit www.provisual.com.au or email marketing@provisual.com.au and keep your construction site actively safe by downloading the Pro-Vis AR app from the Apple app store or the Google Play store
. The future of safety is augmented reality.
